Charges laid in old murder case

Burnaby RCMP say there’s been a break in a murder case dating back nearly 20 years.

They say Jaswant Singh Gill, a 40-year old man from Vancouver, has been charged with first degree murder in the December 1994 shooting death of Thomas Akerman, whose body was found in a vehicle in Burnaby.

Gill is also charged with murdering his wife, in a case that goes back seven years.

Gill faces second degree murder charges in the death of his 33 year old wife, Gurpreet.

She was the bride in an arranged marriage and had been living in the Vancouver area when her family in india reported her missing in 2006.

Investigators say they initially had very few clues to go on but they never gave up.

Over time, a missing person investigation made it clear she’d met with foul play.

Eventually, her remains were found in Richmond.

Gill was arrested on that crime back in mid-February.
