Christy Clark heading back to Asia, taxpayers’ group wonders why

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is questioning the need for Christy Clark’s latest trip to Asia — her third since becoming premier last year.

On September 11, Clark will attend the World Economic Forum’s ‘Meeting of the New Champions,’ taking place this year in Tianjin, China.

The premier will also visit Hong Kong and Beijing for meetings on BC’s liquefied natural gas strategy.

Jordan Bateman with the taxpayers’ group says the premier’s office has done a poor job justifying the junket.

“You don’t get a real comprehensive list of who’s going on the trip. What’s the cost?  What’s the potential value of the trip?  Government could do themselves a whole lot of favours — this is a premier who’s under criticism for not being able to articulate what she’s trying to accomplish.”

A spokesperson for the premier’s office defends the trip, saying Clark was invited by the World Economic Forum and the premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan are also attending.

Clark’s office adds the trip is necessary to solidify relationships forged during the previous trade missions.
