While the Federation of Canadian Municipalities waits for a response from Ottawa on a new model for infrastructure funding, the Mayor of Port Coquitlam says some local upgrades are well past their due date, “Over the next ten years, we have five billion dollars worth of infrastructure that we need to upgrade or replace in the Metro Vancouver area; so we can’t do that just on property taxes and user fees.”
The FCM wants Ottawa to boost annual funding to 5.75-billion dollars from 3.25-billion, but Finance Minister Jim Flaherty’s already indicated existing levels won’t change.
