City educators want your ideas on property uses

The Vancouver School Board wants your input on what to do with some of the District’s schools and other VSB-owned sites.

Deputy Superintendent Jordan Tinney says some schools being under capacity, finances, and aging infrastructure have led to the consultations.

Tinney says people don’t want schools to close, so now it’s about finding out what the public would like to see done with schools and other sites owned by the district.

He says leasing out space is one option. He gave an example of a school that became an urban farm centre, “Where they have everything from food production to cooking to preparation to a market and a produce store, there are educational classrooms on-site.”

The next consultation session is Wednesday night at 6:30 at Kitsilano Secondary.

The final public consultation is at Britannia Secondary on May 15th.

Tinney says staff will likely make recommendations to the Board by the end of June.
