Civic politicians will be updated on new RCMP contract management committee

Civic politicians will get an update Thursday on the work of the new provincial contract management committee dealing with local government concerns over the new RCMP deal.

Politicians at the Union of BC Municipalities convention will hear from  RCMP Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens and Langley city Mayor Peter Fassbender

“And the main message we are going to give everyone is this is not just a committee that is going to sit around and talk we are focused on action we are focused on developing this new contract and relationship to the benefit of local governments and their various detachments.”

Fassbender says mayors are still worried about costs with some looking at alternatives to the RCMP.

“That there is some communities that are looking at the options and they have got an independent third party that is looking at it is going to help to bring some focus to the discussion and so i think it is a healthy thing that people are still asking hard questions so am I and so is every other community in the province.”

Fassbender says city councils are still asking hard questions about the new RCMP deal.

“And you know what we face here in British Columbia is not unique to us there are 11 other provinces and territories that are asking the same question.”

Fassbender says after two meetings already, and another coming next month, there is already action.

“We have got a sub-committee of the group that is meeting to drill into the new funding that was announced in the federal budget and what affect that has on communities.”

Communities have been promised more control in the new RCMP contract and Fassbender is confident Ottawa will play ball.
