Coast Guard cuts hang over launch of Vancouver salmon fishing season

Vancouver salmon fishermen are returning to the water for another season.

A departing fleet was blessed as they left from Vancouver’s fishermen’s wharf – in the shadow of impending cuts to the Kitsilano Coast Guard station.

Irvin Figg with the fishermen’s union was quick to blast the move.

“It seems like it doesn’t matter who’s running the show in Ottawa. You know there’s nobody out there that signs off on the budget in regards to fisheries and oceans, who has any oars in the water. That’s for sure. And they’re doing it from somewhere where they don’t even know what’s going on.”

Figg says commercial fishing remains dangerous – and the loss of the nearby rescue base will only cause harm.
