Coast Guard investigates strange slick in English Bay

Boaters have reported what appears to be an oil slick not far from Vancouver’s Sunset beach.

“It’s kind of a foamy, lighter colour on the outskirts of the slick, but the actual slick is like about a foot thick, about a foot wide, of what looks like black, thick oil.”

But Port Metro Vancouver spokesperson Barbara Joy-Kinsella says it’s not actually oil, but either ash or soot.

“We’re not sure what the source is at this time. But Port Metro Vancouver and the Canadian Coast Guard are working closely together to determine what the source is.”

She says vessels have been dispatched from both groups and will return with more information shortly on whether the substance is a threat to the environment, and how to clean it up.
