Comedy club returns to the city

Yuk Yuk’s is back for more belly laughs after a two-year hiatus in Vancouver.

“For over 35 years, we have been responsible for the biggest names in comedy,” said Mark Breslin, founder of the comedy-club chain. “That’s a tradition that needs to continue.”

The popular club was forced to close its doors in 2010 after disagreements arose within the company.

“The franchisee and I did not see eye to eye. He didn’t want to build talent nationally, he was really only focused on building talent locally. That’s a get-out as far as I’m concerned.”

Emo Phillips, considered by Jay Leno to be one of the top joke writers in the world, kicked off the reopening Thursday and continues his set this weekend.

“His jokes are not only beautifully constructed, they also assume a knowledge of religion, politics and philosophy,” Breslin says.

“We wanted to make the statement that this is the kind of club that would only show comics who have sophisticated material.”

Comedy lovers can look forward to upcoming performances by Gilbert Gottfried, Glen Foster and Jeff McEnery at the 2837 Cambie St. location within the next month.
