Committee in charge of legislature’s finances to meet this week post-audit

After last week’s damning report from Auditor General John Doyle into the B.C. legislature’s finances, an all-party committee will have a rare meeting to deal with the issue.

Legislative assembly management committee chair Bill Barisoff says he hopes Tuesday’s meeting will see quick action.

“Most definitely, we will institute change quickly and there is no doubt in our mind. In fact, we have sent some stuff off to Mr. Doyle already that is why we have brought in Arn and Deloitte to help us to go down that path.”

Barisoff says after thinking about the disastrous audit, he has some regrets.

“When I look back at it, I think to myself we should probably have done more and quicker.”

The committee will release a public statement after the meeting.

The NDP’s Shane Simpson adds people shouldn’t blame all MLAs.

He says when it comes to Doyle’s report the buck stops at the committee.

“I don’t think we did a good enough job that is clear. We need to do a better job on that and I accept a share of the responsibility for that and we need to meet more often, we need to pay more attention, we need to demand a higher level of accountability, and that is our responsibility and we need to do that  and we didn’t do a good enough job.”

It is not yet clear how much it will cost to bring in accounting firm Deloitte to help get the books in order.
