Cormorant saves kayakers off VanIsle

Three kayakers have been rescued by the crew of a Cormorant helicopter from 442 Squadron, Comox.

The trio had been paddling along the rocky shoreline near Estevan Point when one of the craft rolled in choppy water.

When companions came to the rescue, one of the kayaks was severely damaged on the rocks.

The group managed to get ashore and above the tide line when a passing boater spotted them and called the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria.

The helicopter arrived at 5:20 p.m. and, finding no place to land, they lowered their rescue tech to get the kayakers out of danger one at a time.

Aircraft Commander Captain Jean Leroux said, “It was clear they had no other means of getting off the rocks safely.”

All three men were uninjured and were flown back to their campsite near Espinosa Inlet.
