Coroner’s inquest to begin into 2011 shooting death in Downtown Eastside

A coroner’s inquest is set to begin today into the case of a man shot dead a year ago by Vancouver police officers in the Downtown Eastside.

48-year-old Darrell Elroy Barnes was fatally shot by an officer last July at Powell Street and Gore Avenue.

Witnesses say they saw him run at a group of police holding a machete.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team took over the case, and later said officers first fired at Barnes with a bean-bag gun before shooting him dead.

But they said they couldn’t discuss how many times the bean-bag gun was fired, or if any of the rounds hit him.

The public inquest does not try to find anyone responsible in a death, but makes recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents.

It’s set to take place at Coroner’s Court in Burnaby until Friday.
