Coroner’s Jury releases recommendations after mushroom farm deaths and injury

More inspections, more reporting, more training.

That’s among the 15 recommendations made by an Inquest jury into the deaths of three workers at a mushroom farm in Langley four years ago.

Jim Sinclair, head of the BC Federation of Labour, says the findings, as long as they’re implemented, will hold employers accountable, “We’re hoping in the next few weeks, we will hear a positive response, a firm affirmation there will be more inspectors, there will be a declaration of accountability from the companies, there will be training that’s being implemented. All those things need to be done, and they need to be done soon.”

The three workers were killed in 2008 when they entered a composting shed and were hit by toxic fumes.

The farm’s operators were fined 350-thousand dollars, but they have since declared bankruptcy.
