Cranbrook man survives overnight after vehicle plummets 100 feet

A Cranbrook man is lucky he wasn’t more seriously hurt after his SUV plummeted 100 feet down an embankment.

The man says he went off the road sometime Saturday night, and he survived overnight in his vehicle.

Cranbrook RCMP Constable Melody Munro says the 46 year old managed to call police for help about 7:30 Vancouver time, Sunday morning.

Mounties found the vehicle overturned in a canyon along Wildhorse Forestry Service Road, about 10 kilometres east of Cranbrook.

“It was just luck that he was able to be making contact with police to have cell phone coverage in that area, and etcetera.”

Munro says the area is mountainous terrain with steep slopes that run along a narrow gravel road that doesn’t have barriers.

The man was airlifted to hospital in Calgary with serious injuries to one of his arms.
