Crown asks for up to 18 months for first convicted Vancouver Stanley Cup rioter

The Crown is asking a judge to sentence the first person convicted in the Stanley Cup riot to more than a year in jail.

Twenty-year-old Ryan Dickinson is the first person to plead guilty in the riot and will be the first sentenced for joining in on the mayhem that followed Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final last June.

In an agreed statement of facts read in court, Dickinson admits to helping to trash an unmarked police vehicle and later vandalizing a clothing store in downtown Vancouver.

Crown lawyer Patti Tomasson has asked a provincial court judge to sentence Dickinson to between 15 and 18 months in jail, along with one to three months for breaching bail conditions related to a previous assault charge.

Tomasson says the rioters stripped a sense of safety and security from the people of Vancouver, and must face serious punishment regardless of their level of involvement.

Dickinson’s lawyer has yet to make his own recommendation on sentencing.
