Crown plans to appeal “not guilty” verdict in Turley case

The mother of a teenage girl who died at a Maple Ridge house party says Crown plans to appeal the “not guilty” verdict handed to the woman who hosted it.

Victoria Turley was acquitted of failing to provide the necessities of life..

The judge ruled Turley did what any reasonable person would do, by staying with 16-year-old Shannon Raymond all night — after the girl became sick from mixing ecstasy and alcohol.

But Crown alleged Turley refused to call 911 until the teen was already dead.

Shannon’s mother, Julie Raymond says she’s still reeling from the verdict, and has mixed emotions about an appeal.

“I’m afraid to put any hope out there, for fear of getting it yanked out, yet again, from underneath us.”

Raymond says testimony at trial was different from what witnesses gave at the preliminary inquiry, but she’s unclear if Crown will pursue perjury charges.

She’s hoping an appeal will bring a different verdict.
