Disney’s ice, ice, baby

So far, almost all attempts at being an awesomely fun dad have been methodically thwarted by my three-year-old son, London.

Last winter I took him to his first hockey game. He promptly passed out before the end of the first period.

Last summer, Sesame Street Live. He was overwhelmed … and not in a good way. Tears were shed.
At Festival du Bois, he barely touched his poutine. We stuck to parks. Swimming pools. The occasional mountain trail.

Then, with a renewed sense of excitement: Yo Gabba Gabba Live. Too loud, he said.

Last Friday, we returned to Pacific Coliseum for another crack at hockey. Despite the Vancouver Giants blowing out the Victoria Royals 11-3, and a short-lived fascination with the above-ice stunt-flying of the Alaska Air mini-blimp, London declared at the end of the second period: “I no like hockey, daddy. Too loud.”

His damning criticism of Canada’s national pastime seemed somewhat hypocritical, especially under the interrogation-style glare of our homeward-bound bus’ interior lights. As we rolled down Hastings Street a transfixed London seemed torn between a group of boisterous teenagers quaffing Old Style Pilsners on our right, and a young man at the back indiscriminately shouting about AIDS before switching gears and daring one of the drunk teens to punch him in the face. Kind of unpredictable, really.

No matter. This weekend we’re heading back to Pacific Coliseum for Disney on Ice Toy Story 3. Yes, the toys are back in town. Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie — on skates! What can go wrong?

Besides, there’s always the bus ride home. It’s a win-win, man.
