Dog falls ill after ingesting poison at city park

An owner’s walk with her pets turned into a nightmare when her dog became ill after eating rat poison at a city park.

Jennifer Tillet says she was taking her two dogs and her baby for a walk last Tuesday morning, in the off-leash area of Hadden Park near the Vancouver Maritime Museum, when she noticed her seven-year-old dog, Daisy, playing with a black box in a fenced area behind the museum.

She started running towards the dog, but Daisy had knocked the poison out of the box and eaten it.

Tillet says she rushed Daisy, a German shorthaired pointer, to the veterinarian the same day. The next day, Daisy couldn’t move her back leg and lost her appetite.

“I’m extremely happy that she didn’t die and I was able to get her treated right away,” she said. “If some other animal had knocked over the poison first and Daisy ate it later, then she would probably have all these symptoms and I wouldn’t even know it.”

Daisy’s medical bills are now more than $ 1,000 and Tillet says she wants to be compensated.

Vancouver park board general manager Malcolm Bromley says they are in talks with Tillet and they are investigating how the dog got in the fenced area to prevent a similar incident in the future.

“We’re very careful in the city where we use pest-control management of any type,” he said. “We want to make sure that it doesn’t pose any threat to animals.”

Bromley adds they have advised Tillet on how to go about claiming Daisy’s medical expenses.
