Dogs walk for a cause

Dogs and owners joined together yesterday at the annual Scotiabank and B.C. SPCA Paws for a Cause fundraising walk in Stanley Park.

More than 1,000 people and about 600 dogs attended, not just to celebrate animals, but with the goal to raise $ 1 million towards the cost of caring for the 34,000 homeless and abused animals B.C. SPCA takes in each year.

A day like this is very important, explained Lorie Chortyk, B.C. SPCA general manager of community relations, because the $ 21 million that is needed every year to care for and shelter the animals comes from public donations.

“The animals that are here today are really the lucky ones because they’re the ones that already have a loving home,” said Chortyk. “It’s so great that all those people came out to help us raise money for thousands and thousands of animals in B.C. that aren’t that lucky.”
