SURREY, B.C. – RCMP in Surrey, B.C., are adding up the damage after a driver used his car to cause a one-man demolition derby.
Mounties say the incident began just after midnight when the suspect sped away from a traffic stop near the Newton neighbourhood, racing toward North Surrey.
A police pursuit never began, partly because the RCMP helicopter, Air One, had a birds-eye view of the alleged violator as the car sped down residential streets, ignoring traffic lights and stop signs.
Officers moved in when the man tried to leave the car, but he jumped back in, slamming his vehicle into an oncoming police cruiser and a parked car as he fled, slightly injuring the Mountie in the disabled cruiser.
As Air One hovered above, the driver then lead-footed it eastward, careening over a spike belt and eventually loosing control of the car, but not before glancing off another police cruiser and, finally, being arrested.
Investigators are still trying to figure out why the man ran, in the first place, and they haven’t even begun to estimate the possible charges against him.
