Earthquake hits, tsunami warning in effect for parts of BC

A major earthquake — and now a significant aftershock have hit the BC coast.

At 8:04 tonight — a magnitude 7.1 quake struck the Queen Charlottes — about 40 kilometres south of Sandspit — with a depth of about 19 kilometres.

That has now been followed by an aftershock — magnitude 5.8 — also in the Haida Gwaii region.

Officials have now triggered a tsunami warning, affecting the north coast of BC and Haida Gwaii, and the central coast including Bella Bella, Bella Coola and Shearwater.

Officials say it’s believed a low level tsunami could impact marinas and other coastal infrastructure or create strong currents in harbours and isolated coastal areas in these zones.

Local governments in affected areas are being advised to activate their their emergency plans and to immediately evacuate marinas, beaches, and other areas that are below the normal high tide mark.
