Calgary-based Enbridge has announced changes to its Northern Gateway pipeline proposal, designed to appease some of its critics.
Extra measures announced will cost $ 500-million and are aimed at addressing safety and environmental concerns.
So-called “enhancements” include increasing pipeline wall thickness on water crossings, such as major tributaries to the Fraser, Skeena and Kitimat rivers.
There will also be more inline inspections, installation of dual leak detection systems, and have round-the-clock staff at pump stations in remote locations, to help the respond to abnormal conditions.
The changes come after shocking news last week Enbridge learned about a spill from their pipeline along Michigan’s Kalamazoo River – but took seventeen hours to respond.
That revelation has raised serious concerns about the company’s ability to respond to a disaster in BC.
