Enbridge Pipeline’s President says the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline would be well protected from quakes like the one that took place Saturday night off Haida Gwaii.
John Carruthers says the planned route for the line was far west of the area hit on the weekend and, in fact, avoids most seismic activity.
He says new technology is another safeguard to prevent damage, “we have stronger steels with better quality – test them regularly in the mills and as they are brought onto the pipeline. We also would have a lot stronger coatings than we would have seen in the past.”
Carruthers, speaking on the Bill Good Show, says the Trans Alaska oil pipeline shows the strength of new technology. It sits over the Denali fault line and withstood a close range 7.9 quake in 2002 without breaking or leaking.
