Enbridge will forge ahead with plans for Northern Gateway despite opposition

The company behind the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline has its own message for thousands of protesters who jammed the lawn of the Legislature today.

Enbridge Vice-President Janet Holder says the company is taking every precaution to prevent an oil spill from happening.

“Oil spills are not inevitable that the industry and in particular Northern Gateway is putting a lot of effort into ensuring..or minimizing the risk of such oil spills.”

Holder says protesters should understand the value oil and energy production brings to this country’s infrastructure.

“It will add 270-billion dollars of value to the country and that is not something we should be easily shying away from.”

Holder says there can be a balance between energy production and the environment.

“For 50-60 years we have managed to co-exist with energy infrastructure and the environment and it has not been an issue for Canada and we believe we can still move forward and have this pipeline co-exist with the environment in a very very friendly, safe, and sustainable way.”

Holder says despite the politics, and mounting opposition to the pipeline Enbridge will forge ahead to try and get it built.

“The reason why it is important is that it really is the right thing for Canada this is very important for the prosperity of the country, for British Columbia, Albertans, and the rest of Canada you know we enjoy a really good life in Canada and that life is really underpinned by the export markets.”
