B.C.’s environment minister is defending the carbon tax even as gas prices hit the ceiling.
The carbon tax goes up again on July 1, from 5.56 cents per litre to 6.67.
“When you look at the big jump in gas prices we’ve seen lately, the carbon tax is, you know, quite small,” says Terry Lake.
Lake says the tax will be reviewed beginning this summer, but killing it is not an option since the $ 1 billion it generates is offset by income tax cuts.
“I would prefer to tax something that is undesirable, that is carbon, and reduce taxes on things that are desirable. That’s income and success.”
But even Liberal MLA Bill Bennett has said the tax should be scrapped.
