Fall out in the Joint Rescue Co-ordination centre after leaked Coast Guard report

After a confidential report on the closing of Kits Coast Guard base was leaked, a member of the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre has been told his contract will not be renewed.

Public Service Alliance of Canada BC spokesperson Bob Jackson says the move to suddenly crack down on a supervisor at JRCC is unusual.

“The understanding that I have is he has gone back to his substantive position that he was acting in a position for a period of time and that wasn’t renewed after this report came out and I am not entirely sure what to make of that it could be the government is exercising its will I suppose.”

Jackson says there has been no consulation from the feds before closing Kits base.

“If there was even a small amount of consultation, if one Conservative MP would have actually visited the base and saw what goes on there I don’t think the government ever would made the decision that they did.”

Jackson says a look needs to be taken at how the Coast Guard is run, at the top.

“Something as serious as life saving and life and death situations I think needs to recieve the highest level of importance in terms of direction.”

Jackson says despite tons of evidence, including a leaked report from the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre, BC Tory MP’s remain quiet.

“Maybe they find themselves backed into a corner now where they feel that they can’t give in fro some reason now and they need to save face I don’t know what the reason is but I think that the public has certainly spoken very loud and very clear as have virtually everybody else that has rendered an opinion on this decision that it needs to be reversed.”

Kits Base is scheduled to be closed by the federal government next year.

They insist the move will not affect service or safety.
