Families of in-care residents object to facility’s cost saving plans

The son of a resident at Burnaby’s George Derby Care Home is hoping families will come together to rally against the plan for some services to be contracted out.

A meeting for families was hosted by the Hospital Employees Union Wednesday night.

Dale Gebhard says there is strength in numbers and says they want to passionately convey their concerns, “I would like to see us be a little bit more outside the box. One of the problems that the general public has is, we’ve all seen the petitions, we’ve all seen the rallies and the object is to get the people that can make the changes to sit up and look.”

The George Derby Centre is set to layoff 90 unionized employees in the spring in an effort to save money and provide more care hours.

Gebhard is concerned about how care at the centre may be impacted.
