Families of people killed or injured by police meet in Vancouver

BC’s new Independent Investigations Office will be on the agenda Sunday during a Vancouver workshop… bringing together the families of people killed or seriously wounded by police.

Al Wright — who lost his 22-year old son Alvin in a 2010 Langley RCMP shooting — supports the new civilian-run review team, but he’s not convinced it is completely independent.

“We have to uphold the law and if we don’t, there’s no questions asked. You’re charged. You go through the thing and you have to prove in a court of law that you’re innocent — if you are. You know, why don’t the police? They’re just innocent right through the get-go and this just seems to be a big problem.”

Wright says he’d also like to see more support services offered to families within hours of losing a loved one.

The day long workshop is being hosted by the BC Civil Liberties Association.
