Fare evaders can avoid paying fine for years if they take it to court

We’ve all heard the transportation minister say under new legislation, drivers with unpaid transit fines won’t be able to renew their licence and vehicle registration.

What Blair Lekstrom didn’t say is that if you decide to contest the ticket, you “can” still renew your vehicle insurance.

Get a $ 173 transit violation ticket and you’ve got 30 days to notify the province you want to dispute the fine and a court date will be set.

Once that process is put into place, there’s nothing preventing drivers from renewing their vehicle insurance, according to ICBC’s Adam Grossman.

“If you’re in a dispute process, then there is no ‘refuse to issue’ on your licence or your insurance.”

The Violation Ticket Centre says it’s taking between six months and a year to even set a court date, and with the courts already bogged down, it’s about another year on top of that to actually appear before a judge.
