Some call them an eyesore — others an essential traffic route.
Either way, the fate of the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts looks set to be decided this summer.
A staff report will be tabled to Vancouver City Council before the summer break — likely in late July.
Vision councillor Geoff Meggs says he has no inside knowledge of what will be recommended, but he says history is on the side of removing the viaducts.
“That’s what’s been happening in cities around the world. Freeways have been taken down, especially in urban quarters, they’re really not helpful to anything, and it leads to a much more liveable city.”
A public ideas contest was held last year, looking at options for the land in the northeast corner of False Creek.
The idea of re-visiting the role of the viaducts was first brought forward in a motion three years ago.
