BC’s top labour leader isn’t taking much comfort from agreements reached recently with the BC Nurses Union and BC Government and Service Employees Union, “I think we’re in for a rocky road still. Unless the Government decides it’s going to actually deal fairly with these people and give a fair and reasonable wage increase.”
BC Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair, says bargaining continues for more than 100-thousand public sector workers, “At a number of the tables, the Government’s still demanding concessions; to give up rights in the collective agreement and cut their benefit plans. So, it’s a long way from being over. It’s up to each individual union, but I think that you’ll see more job action.”
Government workers still needing new collective agreements include members of CUPE, the Health Sciences Association and Hospital Employees Union.
Earlier Wednesday, a one-day strike was staged by thousands of workers with the Insurance Corporation of BC. The members of COPE Local 378 set up picket lines at more than 20 locations across the Lower Mainland.
