The Federal government will appeal a landmark decision from the BC Supreme Court, striking down the ban on assisted suicide.
Federal lawyers plan to seek a stay of all aspects of that court decision, including, special permission given to 64-year-old Gloria Taylor to seek doctor-assisted suicide within the next year.
The move isn’t sitting well with BC Civil Liberties Association lawyer Carmen Cheung.
“This case was quite urgent, and that urgency was recognized by the lower courts in granting the expedited hearing and in putting out the decision so quickly…so the fact the government is seeking a stay is disapointing to us.”
The deadline for the Federal government to file its appeal is on Monday.
