Feds promote changes to RCMP act

One day after the federal government announced changes — making it easier to discipline bad Mounties — officials from Ottawa are now in Vancouver to explain those changes.

Standing behind a podium featuring the statement, ‘Enhancing trust in the RCMP,’ Parliamentary Secretary Candice Hoeppner says the public safety ministry has given Commissioner Bob Paulson the power to quickly dismiss officers who break the law.

“We’ve heard the call for change.  We’ve worked closely with the RCMP to develop the best way forward.  I’m very proud to be here with all of you to outline these measures.  Our goal is to ensure that the RCMP remain trusted and an adaptive organization for generations to come.”

The legislation has not been approved yet, so current rules can’t change.

Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens admits it will not likely be retrocative.
