Ferry group wants fare reductions

A group representing Islanders who depend on BC Ferries wants government to rollback fares by 25 percent.

The BC Ferry Advisory Committee speaks for Gulf Island, Sunshine Coast and minor route residents.

They say that crippling fares are leading to lost jobs and crumbling tourism.

Saltspring Island ferry advisory committee chair Harold Swierenga says a drop in fares is needed, but unlikely.

“To get the traffic back up  in the short run there would have to be a fairly substantial decrease in the level of fares. Quite frankly, given the financial situation in the province today, I don’t think that is going to happen”

The committee would also like to see the government provide money to replace aging vessels.
