Firmly rooted in its values

It’s an organization that sparked a generation of environmentalism and action, but its director would prefer Greenpeace not exist.

Not because the world doesn’t need committed activists, scientists and researchers to stand up for the planet — it does.

But on the organization’s 40th birthday, Greenpeace Canada executive director Bruce Cox says the perfect world would be one that instinctively puts the environment first.

“The overarching goal is to see Greenpeace disappear in the next 40 years,” Cox said.

“We want government to be responsible and deal with these issues but they’re not. Until they do, there’s a need for environmental organizations like us.”

Because of Greenpeace’s early exploits, thousands of similar organizations have sprung up around the world.

It’s proof that people can make a difference, Cox said.

“We should all take inspiration from it,” he said.

“(Greenpeace) started out as a small group of people that took a stand and tried to change the way things are. I truly believe we make our own future.”
