A judge has sentenced the first person convicted in Vancouver’s Stanley Cup riot to 17 months in jail.
Twenty-year-old Ryan Dickinson pleaded guilty to participating in a riot, admitting to being among a mob that trashed an unmarked police car and then later vandalizing a clothing store.
The Crown had asked for 15 to 18 months for the rioting charge and an additional one to three months for the bail breach, while his lawyer asked for a year.
Provincial court judge Malcolm MacLean says Dickinson made deliberate choices that night, and he rejects the notion that the young man merely had a momentary lapse in judgment.
MacLean has sentenced Dickinson to 16 months for participating in a riot and another month for the bail breach.
With credit for time served, Dickinson has 13 and a half months remaining in his sentence.
