Fish researcher accused of not doing his homework

VANCOUVER – A biologist says he hasn’t discovered any exotic germs that have been introduced to B.C. wild salmon through the eggs of farmed Atlantic fish.

But Michael Kent, a microbiologist at Oregon State University, was criticized by a lawyer for a coalition of groups opposed to fish farms who accused him of not doing his research.

Gregory McDade told a federal inquiry today that Kent has not taken a close look at the links between fish farms and disease.

Kent disagreed, however, saying he hasn’t seen any strong evidence of pathogens other than sea lice being transmitted from fish farms.

The Cohen Commission is listening to testimony that focuses on disease transmission.

The kind of exchange between McDade and Kent is likely to be repeated this week and next as the commission begins its hearings on diseases and later, fish farms.
