The head of the BC River Forecast Centre says river levels in Prince George are peaking now as the water from the weekend works its way through BC’s river systems.
Dave Campbell says that peak is a fair bit below what was seen a week ago and is expected to improve through the next couple of days.
He says the extreme Southeast part of the province is being watched closely with heavy rains forecast.
“We are expecting to see a potential for emerging flood issues, particularly in the East Kootenay, the Elk River, areas around Cranbrook, Fernie, Kimberley, and potentially extending out into the West Kootenay in areas like Kaslo and the Slocan River.”
Rivers in the Northwest have filled over the past few days, and that area is also being watched.
In the lower mainland meanwhile, levels at the Mission gauge are rising, but are expected to reach about 6.4 metres this weekend, that’s similar to levels last weekend, and lower than what was initially predicted.
In Sicamous an evacuation order has been lifted for some of the hundreds of affected residents but it remains an evacuation alert and residents must be ready to leave again at a moments notice.
The City of Chilliwack is still keeping a close eye on the Fraser especially in the Carey Point area.
Mayor Sharon Gaetz says three families there remain under an evacuation order.
She says 39 others have been told to be packed up and be ready to leave at a moments notice.
“We have heard about Friday we should be seeing some rising in the water levels and we also have in the Fraser Valley Regional District there is some people living out on Nicomen Island that they had made some contingency plans for they recieved an evacuation alert.”
She says Mission has stepped forward to provide a place for those people to stay should an evacuation be needed.
