For sale signs on provincially owned Burnaby land surprises Mayor

The Mayor of Burnaby is surprised to learn the province has put a for sale sign on some property within his municipality.

Derek Corrigan says the lot is at 6th Street and 18th Avenue on the edge of New Westminister with a sale price he says is below market value.

Corrigan says the province is passing up an opportunity for affordable housing just to drum up dollars to balance the books.

“Most of us are aware that the provincial government is selling off land now to balance their budget. They are leaving what I think is a big problem for the government that follows them in trying to reaquire land to deliver for housing purposes in what has become a very expensive area of the lower mainland to live in.”

Corrigan says the city wasn’t consulted and neither was area’s MLA the NDP’s Raj Chouhan.
