VANCOUVER – Fortress Paper Ltd. (TSX:FTP) said Thursday that construction has resumed at its cellulose mill in Thurso, Que., after the end of a walkout by unionized employees of contractors.
The Vancouver-based company said all workers have reported to the construction site.
“The company expects construction activity to reach normalized levels once the construction workforce is fully remobilized and construction activities are fully ramped-up, however it is possible that labour relations could change as a result of ongoing opposition to proposed government legislation,” Fortress said in a statement.
Pulp production is expected to begin by mid-November.
Construction on the dissolving pulp conversion and biomass cogeneration projects in Thurso was suspended last week because of a walkout by unionized employees of contractors hired for the job.
Fortress Paper said the walkout was due to worker opposition to a bill proposed by the Quebec government and not as a result of disputes with the company or the contractors who employ them.
Fortress is a leading international producer of security and other specialty papers and products, operating mills in Switzerland and Germany as well as Thurso.
