German skier killed in East Kootenay avalanche

A skier from Germany has been killed by an avalanche in the East Kootenay.

It happened to a heli-skiing party yesterday afternoon east of Jumbo Mountain.

Police say three skiers were caught by the snowslide that was 150-metres wide.

One was buried but the heli-guide and other members of their party dug him out – his injuries are life-not threatening.

A second man partially buried wasn’t hurt.

But a 34-year-old man was unresponsive when dug out and efforts at the scene and at the Invermere hospital to revive him failed.

Weather conditions were good and all skiers were trained to properly use a beacon.
