The BC Government is putting five million dollars on the table to help schools become energy efficient, but one critic says the money is not nearly enough.
If schools are not carbon neutral in BC they must buy offsetting carbon credits from the Pacific Carbon Trust, a thorn in the side of many Districts in the last few years.
Environment Minister Terry Lake says the new five million dollar fund responds to the concerns raised by school officials last year, “…and essentially is equal to the amount they would pay in offsets under the old program.”
But Independent MLA Bob Simpson says the money is not nearly enough for cash strapped school districts, “So, what the government’s done today is quite literally smoke and mirrors, and it fixes nothing.”
Simpson says the government should simply repeal carbon neutrality edict.
