The BC government says it’s better for the environment and better for families.
The 20 year old AirCare program is being phased out over the next two and a half years.
Starting in 2015 owners of passenger cars and trucks will no longer have to cough up the 46 dollar or 23 dollar fee for AirCare.
Environment Minister Terry lake says the new technology in cars means fewer are failing the test, so Lake says the government will now study how to reduce other forms of pollution currently not covered by AirCare, such as diesel-powered vehicles.
“See if we can get better value in terms of improving air quality in the Lower Mainland and in the Fraser Valley”
This, despite a report from the government itself two years ago that recommended AirCare be extended to 2020.
Lake says that’s just one study.
