Government supports highway flaggers

BC’s Transportation Minister says the traffic signs that call for double the fines in construction zones are simply out of date.

The BC Flagging Association recently learned there is no actual law to back up the signs posted in roadwork zones, so it has written a letter to the Government, asking to make a law.

Minister Blair Lekstrom says those signs were first put up in the 1990s, and the fine back then doubled to 150 dollars, “The minimum fine today in workzone is 196 dollars. And we will do all we can to ensure we protect everybody, including our flaggers.”

He adds the fine structure is now graduated, to better reflect the seriousness of the offence.

The fines for speeding in a construction zone, for example, range from 196 to 483 dollars.
