Gregor’s Vision sweeps Vancouver

Vancouver voters have whole-heatedly embraced Gregor Robertson and his Vision Vancouver team.

Robertson has been re-elected mayor after a terrific night for his party, which also swept the top seven council seats, five school trustee seats and five parks board seats.

If unofficial results hold up, every single candidate under the Vision banner has been elected into office.

Vision’s council presence includes Raymond Louie, Kerry Jang, Heather Deal, Andrea Reimer, Tim Stevenson, Geoff Meggs and Tony Tang.

The Non-Partisan Association mayoral candidate Suzanne Anton admitted defeat with three polls left to report, trailing with 57,102 votes to Robertson’s 75,234.

The NPA secured two council seats, up from the lone spot Anton clung to in 2008.

Elizabeth Ball, George Affleck look set to represent the NPA on council, which Anton says will bring balance to City Hall.

“Now there will be debate at City Hall,” Anton, gracious in defeat,
told supporters. “I’m happy that some of our team was elected, but
disappointed more of our team didn’t.”

Bill Yuen looked to be the third NPA councillor right up to the final poll, but was leapfrogged at the last minute by Green Party candidate Adriane Carr.

The night’s big losers appeared to be COPE.

A foundation of Vancouver politics, the party has plummeted from three councillors to zero in this election.

Only one of their candidates, school trustee Allan Wong, was elected.

It turned out to be an easy night for many incumbents across the Lower Mainland.

In Surrey, Dianne Watts and her Surrey First team swept into office and shut out all opponents.

Derek Corrigan was re-elected in Burnaby with 76 per cent of the vote, as was Richmond’s Malcolm Brodie by a wide margin over challenger Richard Lee.
