“He who lives by the sword…”

It’s the end of the era for gangsters who had their heyday in the ’90’s. So says Ranj Dhaliwal, who writes about gang culture on the Lower Mainland.

Ranj Cheema, a known associate of fellow big-name gangster Bindy Johal, was shot and killed in east Vancouver, as he was getting out of his SUV.

Dhaliwal says Cheema was considered the king of the Indo-Canadian underworld and his murder comes with a warning, “In this gangster lifestyle, there is no ‘make one hit, one mark, kill the person,’ and the feud is done. The way gangs are and the trade is out here, retaliation, it’s a common occurrence nowadays.”

Dhaliwal did not want to comment on whether Cheema’s murder could be retaliation for the shooting death of another high-profile gangster. Thomas Gisby was gunned down while in a Starbucks in Mexico last week.
