Health minister says he won’t act on private clinics’ illegal billing

The City of Vancouver says it is up to the Ministry of Health to take action on two private health clinics found to be billing illegally.

But Minister Mike de Jong doesn’t seem ready to do so yet.

Cambie Surgery Centre owner Dr. Brian Day is challenging public health care laws in court, and de Jong says he will wait to see how that plays out

“The Medical Services Commission is taking the action that they believe appropriate to enforce the laws that are in place in British Columbia. We will let that play out, see how that goes. We always operate on the basis that people will comply with the law. To the extent that someone wishes to challenge the constitutional validity on the law – that is why the courts are there.”

A court injuction can for the clinics to comply with the law after 30 days of being notified.
