High winds lash much of coastal B.C.

VANCOUVER – High winds have cut power to thousands of people on Vancouver Island and forced BC Ferries to cancel at least two sailings.

Environment Canada has issued wind warnings for Vancouver Island, Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley. the Sunshine Coast and the Central Coast.

The federal agency says an intense low-pressure system is approaching the coast and creating winds that are gusting up to 110 kilometres per hour.

BC Ferries says severe weather forced the cancellation of 10 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. sailings leaving Nanaimo and Tsawwassen.

BC Hydro says more than 16,000 customers on Vancouver Island were without power by noon Sunday.

According to its website, the hardest hit areas were on the south Island, in the municipalities bordering Victoria.
