The BC Human Rights Tribunal will hear a complaint by a Vancouver woman with albinism over Earls’ Albino Rhino beer and Albino wings.
Ikponwosa Ero says the names are demeaning and humiliating, especially when customers say they would like to order “an Albino.”
Ero must prove she experienced an adverse impact because of the branding, and that her albinism is protected under the Canada Human Rights Code.
Earls tried to have the case dismissed claiming albino is a neutral term, and the name was chosen because it’s a whimsical rhyme not directed towards human beings.
But Ero says there is a history of people with albinism being ridiculed, demonized and excluded from society because they are easily identifiable by their condition.
