Humane society calls for zoo to relocate final living giraffe

In the wake of the third giraffe death at the Greater Vancouver Zoo within the span of a year, the Vancouver Humane Society says the zoo should relocate the last remaining giraffe.

Peter Fricker with the society says this is simply an unnatural environment for the animals.

“It seems common sense to us that the west coast of Canada is not the right place to be keeping giraffes. They’re used to a much warmer climate and they have a specific diet in their natural habitats that’s obviously hard to reproduce here in Canada.”

Zoo staff found 12-year-old Jafari dead in its barn on Sunday.

The animal was described as healthy and the cause of death is unknown.

Giraffes can live around 25 years in captivity.
