Hundreds gathered at Victory Square on Sunday to participate in a Remembrance Day ceremony.
Percy Smith was in the British Merchant Marine during World War Two, transporting vital supplies in the north Atlantic.
While Smith says he saw some terrible things, including ships in his convoy sunk by torpedoes, he says he’d do it all again.
“Would I do it again? You’re damn right. If something like this thing took place today, I’ll be right up there.”
Smith says now that he’s older he realizes how lucky he was to make it through the war in good health.
Navy veteran Owen Dolan says just as important as remembering the fallen, is educating young people about the terrors of war.
“I remember our children saying on November 11 years ago, when they were small, they used to say, ‘dad, you were in the war. What did you do?’ I never spoke about it. But now I do admit I think it’s more important now for younger people to realize what happened.”
The ceremony included a march of veterans, flyovers from air force jets, and a 21-gun salute following a moment of silence.
